*Pursuant to the 7020 rules issued by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, all feedlots in excess of 300 animal units must provide a manure management plan to Dodge County at the time of the application.

How Do CAFOs Impact the Environment?

  • Excess nutrients in water (such as nitrogen and phosphorus)
    • contributes to low levels of dissolved oxygen (fish kills)
    • decomposing organic matter that can contribute to toxic algal blooms
  • Degrade water resources
    • contributes to illness by exposing people to wastes and pathogens in their drinking water.
  • Dust and odors can contribute to respiratory problems in workers and nearby residents.

  • Indicates that Minnesota has approximately 18,000 feedlots in operation, according to the 2010-2014 registration
  • Estimates that the amount of manure generated by the livestock would be equivalent to that of a human population of 50 million.
